Schools in Pontyclun

Reviewed by the catchment.school editorial team · Last updated 15 March 2026

Pontyclun is a commuter village in the Vale of Glamorgan corridor, administratively within Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) County Borough Council. Its 8 schools are Welsh establishments, meaning admissions follow the Welsh Government's co-ordinated scheme with RCT as the responsible authority. RCT has one of the most active Welsh-medium expansion programmes in South Wales: several new Welsh-medium primary schools have opened in the borough since 2018, and demand for Welsh-medium places in the Pontyclun area tends to be higher than for English-medium alternatives.

RCT applies a catchment-area system for community schools in addition to the language-medium priority; families living within the defined catchment zone of a particular school receive priority over out-of-catchment applicants at the same language medium. Parents new to the area should use RCT's school finder tool to confirm which catchment they fall within before submitting preferences, as catchment boundaries in this part of the borough do not always align with parish or postcode boundaries.
