Bristol is a large unitary authority with 172 state schools – 101 primary and 22 secondary – across seven main areas. Academy trusts manage 90 of the 172 schools, reflecting a significant shift away from council-maintained schools over the past decade. Two selective schools serve the city, and 28 schools apply faith criteria alongside catchment distance in their oversubscription policies.

Demand for places is considerable: 26 of the 148 schools with published capacity data are currently at or above their admission number. Competition is particularly intense at the city's highest-rated schools, where catchment boundaries can be very tight and the last-distance-offered figure changes significantly from year to year. Of the schools with a current Ofsted inspection, 64 are rated Good or Outstanding – around 64% of rated schools.

Catchment boundaries in Bristol are set by the council for maintained schools and by individual trusts for academies. Bristol City Council publishes its composite admissions prospectus each September, but families should check each academy's own policy directly, as criteria can differ significantly. The January application deadline applies to all Bristol state schools. For secondary applications, some oversubscribed schools operate banding systems – confirm whether this applies before choosing preferences.
