Torfaen is a county borough in southeast Wales encompassing Cwmbran, Pontypool, and Blaenavon, with 22 state schools administered by Torfaen County Borough Council. As in all Welsh local authorities, admissions are co-ordinated under Welsh Government guidance, with Welsh-medium and English-medium schools operating in parallel in some parts of the borough.
Cwmbran, the largest settlement in the borough, has the majority of Torfaen's primary schools and both main secondary schools. Catchment boundaries are formally defined by Torfaen CBC and published in its annual admissions booklet each autumn, covering the intake for the following September.
