Schools in Newcastle-upon-Tyne

Newcastle upon Tyne and its immediate environs have 152 schools across Newcastle City Council (111), North Tyneside (22) and Gateshead (10). The River Tyne and the council boundary divide Newcastle from Gateshead; schools on the south bank - including those in Low Fell, Teams and Dunston - are in Gateshead, not Newcastle.

Newcastle City Council coordinates admissions for community schools using straight-line distance. Schools in the West End, Jesmond and Gosforth areas see varying levels of demand; Gosforth in particular has popular schools where distance tiebreakers can be competitive. North Tyneside Council, covering areas such as Whitley Bay, Wallsend and Tynemouth, runs a separate admissions round.

Newcastle upon Tyne has no selective grammar schools; secondary admissions are based on distance, sibling and, for faith schools, religious criteria. The city has a number of Roman Catholic and Church of England schools that give priority to practising families.
