Schools in Kent
Kent retains one of England's largest grammar school systems, with selective schools spread across Tonbridge, Maidstone, Chatham, Folkestone, Margate and many other towns. The Kent Test (11+) takes place in September each year for entry the following autumn, and registration is required well in advance.
Non-selective community schools in Kent are coordinated by Kent County Council, with catchment boundaries published annually. Competition for places at popular non-selective secondaries in affluent areas such as Sevenoaks and Tunbridge Wells can be significant, with last-distance-offered figures sometimes under one kilometre.
Families should apply through Kent County Council's admissions portal and, if considering grammar schools, register separately for the Kent Test. Academy and free schools within Kent may set their own admissions criteria independently of the county council.
